About the Workshop:
Duke MFA EDA student Michael Betts II will provide an overview of podcasting appropriate for anyone interested in starting their own. In collaboration with Student Leadership, this workshop will highlight the power of storytelling for social change and cover these topic areas:
deciding if podcasting is right for you;
thinking through podcasting topics and current types;
getting gear (and the gear you already own without even knowing it);
ensuring good audio quality;
deciding when and how often to release content; and
careers in podcasting
Bring a charged laptop, a smartphone, and some headphones, and you’ll be cooking in no time!
About the Instructor:
Michael Anthony Betts II is currently in Duke’s Master of Fine Arts in Experimental and Documentary Arts program. He is a sound designer with almost 20 years of audio experience. As he says, “I am a child at heart and sound has always allowed me to play. I describe myself as Bruce Wayne’s little brother T’challa—given we both have really cool toys. As a sound guy, I can’t help but be enamored with a material that literally uses vibration to harden. (Vibranium. . . yes I’m a nerd and proud of it!)” In the summer of 2019, Betts TA’d for Peabody Award winner and longtime NPR radio journalist John Biewen for his annual summer audio intensives at the Center for Documentary Studies.
What is DukeCreate?
DukeCreate is a series of free, hands-on arts workshops designed to help Duke students, staff, and faculty develop a variety of creative skills. Workshops are open to all skill levels and backgrounds. Most take place in the Duke Arts Annex or the Rubenstein Arts Center and are held weeknights 6-8pm. DukeCreate is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts (DukeArts) and University Center Activities and Events (UCAE).
How much does the workshop cost?
Workshops are free to all Duke students and staff, with priority given to students. Class size is limited. Students must sign up in advance at https://training.oit.duke.edu/dukecreate. Walk-ins will only be accommodated on a space-available basis.
Can staff attend DukeCreate workshops?
Duke students can reserve their spot in advance. Online enrollment for Duke staff opens on the day of the workshop. Staff can also show up 10 minutes prior to a workshop in case a slot becomes available.
