About the workshop:

We'll cover the basics of screen printing: the necessary equipment and how it's used, coating and "burning" a screen, the mechanics of pulling a print, and a few best-practice tips and tricks. During the workshop, participants will have ample opportunity to "get their hands dirty (inky)" practicing printing technique; and everyone will walk away with a 2-color DukeCreate poster that they've printed themselves.

About the instructor:

A working graphic designer, Matthew graduated from NC State University College of Design with a masters degree in 2002. In addition to working as a full-time book designer at Duke University Press, he also DJ's regularly on WXDU. In fact, it was creating posters for performances sponsored by the radio station that initially re-ignited Matt's passion for print-making. Whether it's through incorporating the aesthetic into his book cover designs, participating in live printing at festivals and events, exploring self-initiated projects, or leading how-to workshops, screen printing has undoubtably become a vital component of his ongoing creative practice.

DukeCreate is a series of free, hands-on arts workshops designed to help Duke students, staff, and faculty develop a variety of creative skills. Workshops are open to all skill levels and backgrounds. Most take place in the Duke Arts Annex or the Rubenstein Arts Center and are held weeknights 6-8pm. DukeCreate is sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for the Arts (DukeArts) and University Center Activities and Events (UCAE).
